“Book of Books” authored by Dr. James Mathew- added to the collection of Tagore Niketan

The Kerala University Library is pleased to announce an important acquisition by the Tagore Niketan Reference Section: Book of Books (Libri Publishing, 2021). Dr. James Mathew, the first author of the book, presented an inscribed volume of the book to Dr. Asha B, the University Librarian-in-charge, and handed over to Mrs. Lenitha, Section Head,Acquisition. The reception was attended bythe Patrons of the library, Research scholars ,Deputy Librarian Mrs. GeethaSathyan,Dr. SureshKumar(Assistant Librarian,Head,ITsection),Dr. Mehaboob(Tagore Niketan Section In- Charge), Assistant Librarians, Office staff, and Dr.Resmi Sara Thomas [Assistant Librarian] who was instrumental in facilitating this gift to the Library.

Dr. Asha, B.,UL-In –Charge spoke about the value of gifts such as Book of Books to the Library for the benefit of its patrons. Dr. Suresh Kumar remarked highly of the concept, content, design and presentation of Book of Books. Dr. Asha  gave Dr. Mathew a brief tour of the Library. He was impressed by many things from the awe-inspiring historical building which houses the Library, to the courteous staff at its entrance and the friendly officers who provide various services. He was intrigued by the retention of the traditional catalogue using index cards stalked in pull-out drawers for historical significance and, perhaps, for the benefit of the technologically challenged patrons, along with the more easily accessible modern electronic catalogue.  He found the new e-library system in line with modern library systems which allow inter-library borrowing. The latter is important to expand access to books and to support scholarly research. As an example, he mentioned how Professor Elizabeth Witherell, Editor-in-Chief, The Writings of Henry D. Thoreau helped him by searching institutions around the globe for first editions of Thoreau’s first book, A Week on the Concord and Merrimack Rivers with textual corrections in the author’s hand while he was preparing Book of Books.

Dr. Mehaboob gave Dr. James Mathew a tour of the Tagore Niketan Reference Section and the Kerala Studies Reference Section, Archives. Dr. Mathew was particularly fascinated by a compilation of Proclamations by the Maharajas of Travancore and the Temple Entry Proclamation by Maharaja SreeChithiraThirunal Balarama Varma. Dr. Mathew spoke admiringly of the dedication of the administrators and staff of the Library and the Tagore Niketan Reference Section. He also met the Research Scholars and congratulated them on their scholarly pursuit. Dr. Mathew hoped to continue his association with the Library.

This cloth-bound presentation edition ofBook of Books limited to 200 copies [ISBN: 978-1-911451-11-2, 352 pages with over 370 color images] is priced at £110 (₹12,000).
